It is run at the Melbourne Moonee Valley Racecourse over one and a quarter miles (approximately 2000m). Horses that are three or older may enter the race, which is the premier WFA (weight for age) stakes race in Australia. The most famous recent winner of the race was Maykbe Diva who won the 2005 Cox Plate less than two weeks before going on to win her third Melbourne Cup.
The Cox Plate is a key race in the Spring Carnival, and moreover it is the only race in the southern hemisphere to be part of the World Series Racing Championships. |
