Countdown to the 2008 Kentucky Derby Begins - 04-09-08
April 9 - The results of three 2008 Kentucky Derby prep races this past weekend has provided a slightly clearer picture of who will line up in the starting gate on May 3, with all three winners headed for Churchill Downs. For those who finished behind however, the situation is still as clear as mud, some putting in inconsistent performances while others are still slugging it out to amass the necessary minimum earnings in graded stakes races.
Colonel John, who impressed the crowds at Saturday's Santa Anita Derby, will stay on for two more workouts before heading for the Derby 10 days before the big day. Despite getting caught up in traffic early on, Colonel John finished strongly to beat Bob Black Jack by half a length. Bob Black Jack is unlikely to make the trip, with the $150 000 second place not quite enough to secure him a place in the final line-up. But you never can tell.
Another certainty is Recapturetheglory, who was first out the gate and stayed there to win the Illinois Derby. The three-year old, who collected a $300 000 winner's cheque for his efforts, will head for the Derby as soon as his trainer Louie Roussel is able to meet him there.
Also headed for Churchill Downs is Tale of Ekati who edged out War Pass by half a length at Wood Memorial on Saturday. The win puts Tale of Ekati third in the earnings stakes with $738 000. War Pass, the one-time favourite and top earner with $1,47m, may still make the final line-up if his sudden drop off on Saturday can be explained away.
