Coolmore Stud |
Coolmore Stud was founded in
1975 in Fethard, County Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland, and is
acknowledged to be the world's biggest, and arguably the best,
thoroughbred racehorse breeding operations in the world. Originally
inherited by Battle of Britain flying ace Tim Vigors in 1945, what was
to become Coolmore Stud started out at a small agricultural farm.
In 1951 Vigors founded his own bloodstock agency and in 1968 moved to
Coolmore where the operation would begin to grow in leaps and bounds. He
went into partnership with race horse trainer Vincent O'Brien and
successful businessman Robert Sangster. Later Vigors sold his share of
the business to O'Brien and his son-in-law John Magnier.
It was Magnier who built Coolmore Stud into the giant global operation
it is today. As such, Coolmore Stud operates Coolmore Ireland and its
two branches - Ashford Stud, which operates as Coolmore America and is
based near Versailles in Kentucky, USA, and Coolmore Australia, which is
based near Jerry's Plains in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales. |
 |
| What has made Coolmore Stud such a success is John Magnier's eye for
excellence and fine attention to detail, which can be seen in the
operation's well laid out and modern barns and paddocks, and
state-of-the art horse-friendly facilities. This is translated into
Coolmore Stud's slew of talented champion thoroughbreds it has produced
over the years. In February 2006 at the
Fasig-Tipton Florida auction, Coolmore Stud paid a record $16 million
for two-year-old Florida-bred colt, The Green Monkey. |
