Colonel John Stakes Claim To The Kentucky Derby - 03-02-08
March 2 - The Sham Stakes may only have Grade 3 status and a purse of $200,000 but the 2008 running featured two colts that are in the running for this year's Triple Crown. This time it was Colonel John who prevailed over an unlucky El Gato Malo, but there seems little to choose between the two, both of whom have the Kentucky Derby as their ultimate mission.
Colonel John is trained by Eoin Harty and was ridden by the world-class jockey Garrett Gomez. El Gato Malo, undefeated heading into this race, was not helped by the slow pace and he had to expend quite a bit of energy putting away the two horses who made the early running, Victory Pete and Reflect Times, who finsihed third and fourth respectively.
But it was Colonel John who finished best of all with Gomez outriding David Flores. This was the three-year-old debut for the Colonel who finished second in his last juvenile run, the CashCall Futurity. He will go for the Santa Anita Derby next.
Be sure to check out our Triple Crown Power Rankings, which we'll be updating soon to make room for Colonel John. On the strength of this run El Gato Malo will still keep his Top 10 ranking.
