Chinese Draw On New Zealand Horse Racing Expertise - 04-24-08
April 24 - The Orient Lucky Horse Racing Club which is located in Wuhan is working with the Canterbury Jockey Club in getting the horse racing industry in China set up.
Wuhan signed the Friendship treaty with Christchurch in 2006 and since then the CJC has developed a close working relationship with them. The horse racing and gambling permits have been handed over to Wuhan which is the first Chinese city to have a racecourse.
The Wuhan complex is currently being developed with two massive grandstands being built to each side of the main stand. The racecourse already has a full-size racetrack and the stables are being used by local horses being trialed.
Jackie Wu, chairman of Orient Lucky Horse said that they have been to visit a few horse studs in New Zealand and have every intention of buying their horses from that country. The OLHRC will not only be buying racehorses from New Zealand, but will also be drawing on their expertise with regards to jockeys and trainers and any additional industry aspects.
Horse racing has always been a popular pastime in Hong Kong which is now an administrative region of China. Thoroughbreds that were bred in New Zealand were the main attraction.
Wuhan will begin its 2-year trial at the start of 2009. While most racetracks have a "Daily Double" Wuhan will feature the "Daily Special". That's a little horse-eating humour, but seriously, horses that don't win in China will probably end up as most delicious peoples' food.
