History

The Caulfield Racecourse is one of Australia's best regarded racecourses, hosting about 20 race days each season.

Caulfield held its first race in 1859. Early races at Caulfield consisted of riding through course brush, rough heath and sandy hills which earned Caulfield its nickname of 'The Heath'.

The Melbourne Racing Club hosted their inaugural meeting at Caulfield in August 1876 and in 1879 introduced the Caulfield Cup to their fixture list. The Caulfield Cup is still run to this day and is seen by many as Australia's premier thoroughbred test.

Facilities

Crowd capacity at Caulfield Racecourse is about 50 000 (seated). There is elevator access to the grandstands and there is disabled parking and toilets available. There are first aiders on site and two excellent restaurants located in the Rupert Clarke grandstand.

The racecourse is fairly triangular in layout, with the whole course totaling 2080m; the last straight is 367m long. The races are run in an anti-clockwise direction.

There are currently about 500 horses stabled at Caulfield with in excess of 20 trainers also based at the track.
