History |
The Caulfield Racecourse is one of
Australia's best regarded racecourses, hosting about 20 race days each
season.
Caulfield held its first race in 1859. Early races at Caulfield
consisted of riding through course brush, rough heath and sandy hills
which earned Caulfield its nickname of 'The Heath'.
The Melbourne Racing Club hosted their inaugural meeting at
Caulfield in August 1876 and in 1879 introduced the Caulfield Cup to
their fixture list. The Caulfield Cup is still run to this day and is
seen by many as Australia's premier thoroughbred test. |
