Held every year in October, the Caulfield Cup is one of Australia's richest throughbred horse races with a purse of AUS$2,544million and is run over the traditional derby distance of 2400m (12 furlongs). It is also one of the major events on the racing calendar leading up to the Melbourne Cup. The race is open to horses older than three years and since the win by Taufan's Melody in 1998, international interest in the race has increased dramatically.
The Caulfield Cup was first run in 1879. The first winner of the race was a horse called Newminster. In 1881 there were two cups held as the race was moved to later in the year, with the Blue Ribbon the autumn winner and Master Avenel the spring winner. It is a race which has been contested by some of the best horses in Australia and has long been renowned as the first race of Australia's most popular betting double - the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. |

They have raced horses at Caulfied since 1859, although the harsh nature of the track initially led to it being referred to as The Heath. The new-look Caulfield Racecourse, located a few miles away from the city center of Melbourne, was unveiled in April 1996. During the reconstruction, the track was widened to 30 metres around the entire circumference and the straight lengthened by 43 metres. The stand named after Rupert Clarke drew rave reviews from punters. It is glassed in to shield racegoers from inclement weather and also provides an excellent view of the racing below. |

| The race course capacity is 50,000, with a record 52,000 people crowding into the track at the 2005 Caulfield Cup. |
