Casual Conquest To Miss The Epsom Derby - 05-13-08
May 13 - Even though Casual Conquest had a tremendous victory over opponents at Leopardstown on Sunday, his trainer, Dermot Weld says that he is not likely to start at the Epsom Derby.
Casual Conquest, who was sitting on odds of 13-2 before the race, was in last place when he turned for home, but he shot to the front with well over 1/8th of a mile to spare, beating Washington Irving and Moigen in the process.
Casual Conquest has not been entered in the Derby on June 7, but will probably take part in the French or Irish race equivalents. Weld said that they still needed to speak to his owner, Walter Haefner, to see if he wanted to enter, but he didn't feel that it was likely as the entrance fees were just too high.
Weld says that Casual Conquest has great potential even though he was quite backward in training during spring. He said that in the past 10 days or so he had really shown dramatic improvement in his work. Weld added that they will probably be taking Casual Conquest to Chantilly for the Prix du Jockey Club, but that they would consider the Irish Derby too.
Weld had a good day on Sunday. Caribbean Sunset gave him cause for further celebration when she came first in the Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial.
