Captains Lover to Tackle Matriarch Stakes With Valor - 11-03-08
November 3 - South African horseracing fans are always keen to see their homegrown thoroughbreds competing around the world, and later this month they'll have the opportunity to support local four-year-old champion filly, Captain's Lover, as she competes in the Matriarch Stakes (Gr 1) at Hollywood Park.
Come Sunday November 30th, Captain's Lover - owned by Team Valor International - will line up at the starting gate of the prestigious and lucrative 1 mile $500,000 Matriarch Stakes over turf at Inglewood, California, where she'll hopefully showcase the ability she has become so noted for.
Trained by Frenchman Andre Fabre, Captain's Lover was named Champion Filly as a three-year-old in South Africa before going onto to greater things in France. There she impressed with a victory in her debut in the Prix du Pin (Gr 3) over 7 furlongs, followed by a fourth place in the Prix de la Foret (Gr 1).
Said Team Valor International's Barry Irwin, 'We believe that Captain's Lover's will be in top form over a mile in the Matriarch Stakes, as she showed last time out that seven furlongs is too short for her best. Andre likes the timing between races and the fact that the Matriarch is run under weight-for-age conditions.'
In the Prix du Pin at Longchamp in Paris, Captain's Lover kept up a good pace around a bend, before flying into the lead in the final 1 1/2 furlongs and holding on to cross the line a length ahead of veteran runner, Spirito del Vento. In her next race she narrowly missed out on third place in the Prix de la Foret.
After the Matriarch Stakes, Captain's Lover will be turned over to champion American trainer Todd Pletcher. Said Irwin on the decision to part with the South African-bred filly, 'Todd is a top trainer who can successfully raid anywhere in the country, which will be important in the case of Captain's Lover.
'Under normal circumstances we would have sent Captain's Lover to Dubai, were it not for the fact that we already have Russian Sage over there, who is set to run in the lucrative $5-million Dubai Duty Free. As such we decided the best way forward was to bring Captain's Lover to the United States,' he said.
