Canadian International Stakes

Race Name Grade Track
Canadian International Stakes 1 Woodbine Racetrack Canadian International Stakes

Canadian International Stakes

The Canadian International Stakes is held annually in Toronto, Ontario at the Woodbine Racetrack. The purse is a phenomenal $2 Million dollars and the race is open to thoroughbreds of 3 years and older.

The race was created in 1938 and originally known as the Long Branch Championship run at Toronto's Long Branch racetrack. From 1939 to 1966 the race was called the Canadian International Stakes, and then modified slightly from 1966 to 1980 to the Canadian International Championship. Another name change took place in 1981 and stayed the same until 1995; the race name was changed to the Rothmans International for its sponsor Rothmans International plc. The race was run on dirt at the Long Branch Racetrack until the track closed down in 1956. The race then moved to the Woodbine track and in 1958 became a turf race.

Woodbine

The Woodbine racetrack is home to the Canadian International Stakes race. The track is 1? miles long and irregularly shaped with the clubhouse turn deviating from the conventional North American Oval style. It's a left-handed track and the ground floor of the stands accommodates numerous slot machines; of which much of the income is used to augment the racing purses. The Woodbine Facility has 3 tracks and has been lauded as Canada's leading track.

Woodbine Race Course
Other renowned races run at Woodbine are the ATTO Mile, Queen's Plate, the Breeders' Stakes, Woodbine Mile and the E. P. Taylor Stakes race. The Woodbine facility also houses the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Woodbine's seating capacity is 13000 and their stabling capacity is 1860 stalls.
