Breeders' Cup World Championship

The Breeders' Cup World Championships was first held in 1984 at Hollywood Park and in 2007 the meeting was extended to two days and eleven races, expanding on the original eight race card. The increase in races means that the new combined stakes total for the meeting is $23 million, eclipsing the Dubai World Cup total of $21 million. This is of course no coincidence as the Breeders' Cup battles to retain it's place as the world's most important series of horseraces.

The Dubai World Cup meeting certainly has a more international feel to it with trainers, jockeys, and horses congregating from all the major horseracing centers of the world, including America. By contrast the Breeders' Cup, like the country that hosts it, has tended to be more insular and parochial with the vast majority of the horses and connections coming from the USA.

There are usually a handful of European challengers but the conditions of the races favor local horses to a great extent. Nevertheless, the Breeders' Cup is an amazing spectacle that generates enormous betting interest, and usually has an upset or two leading to massive payouts.
