Borderland Derby |
The Borderland Derby is an American horserace for
three-year-old thoroughbreds run in the middle of February each year
at Sunland Park Racetrack in Sunland Park, New Mexico.
Contested over 1 1/6 miles on dirt, the Borderland Derby is the last
prep race before the lucrative $600,000 WindStar Derby in April
(Sunland Park's biggest race). It is also one of many official prep
races for the coveted Kentucky Derby held in May each year at
Churchill Downs Racecourse.
Despite its generous $100,000 purse, the Borderland Derby is
ungraded. It was inaugurated in 2001 and got its name from its
location, as Sunland Park is right on the border with Texas, hence
Borderland Derby. In 2001 and 2002 the race was contested over a
distance of 1 1/6 miles. However, in 2003 and 2004 it was changed to
a distance of 1 mile. In 2004 it was changed back to its original
distance of 1 1/6 miles.
Even though the Borderland Derby has been going for a relatively
short time, it is not without its record-breakers. For instance, it
has been won an impressive four times by champion racehorse trainer
Steve Asmussen - in 2001 with Parting Guest, 2003 with Mr Decatur,
2007 with Takedown and 2008 with Poni Colada, on each occasion with
a different jockey.
While no jockey has ever won the Borderland Derby twice, the fastest
time of 1:36.16 was set in 2002 by Michael Clark aboard
Premeditation. No owner has ever won the Borderland Derby more than
once. |
