Blackiston Hoping To Win Australian Derby - 04-23-08
April 23 - Nigel Blackiston did his apprenticeship under Bart Cummings and spent 4 years as his second foreman. Both trainers have runners in the AJC Australian Derby on Saturday.
Blackiston will be saddling Littorio who is the antepost betting Derby favourite. He came in second behind Kibbutz in the Victoria Derby last spring, and was second again in the Randwick City Stakes; the winner there being No Wine No Song. He finished an unlucky third in the Rosehill Guineas.
Blackiston says that he is trying no to be over-confident because there are a lot of really good horses in the race, but he thinks that Littorio may just have an advantage over the other horses because of his spring campaign which most of the Sydney horses missed out on due to Equine Influenza. Littorio hasn't been very lucky in his last few starts, but he is hoping that he will be unbeaten in Sydney.
Bart Cummings will be starting Book of Kells and Zazabeau and is hoping to claim his 29th Derby victory, which will also be his 250th Group 1 win.
