Big Race Expected From Student Council - 04-03-08
April 3 - The 6-year-old horse Student Council is 3-1 favourite in the Grade 3 John B. Connally Turf Cup which will take place on Saturday.
Student Council was bred by William S Farish and after winning the Maxxam Gold Cup in his graded stakes debut in 2007, was sold to Ro Parra.
He became nationally renowned when he won the Grade 1 Pacific Classic, followed by the Grade 2 Hawhorne Gold Cup. He is now attempting to add another graded stakes win to his name and by doing so will join the ranks of super-elite thoroughbreds that have pulled off wins on dirt, turf and synthetic tracks.
Student Council hasn't raced on turf for quite some time, but trainer Steve Asmussen says that by doing so they are hoping to bring a new dimension to his racing. Asmussen who is fresh from winning the Dubai World Cup with Curlin has asked Quincy Hamilton to ride Student Council for the race.
Hamilton who won the John B. Connally Turf Cup last year riding Mending Fences is looking forward to his first ride on Student Council saying that he has seen Student Council run a few really big races.
