Big Name Nominations for Durban July Handicap - 06-17-10
June 17 - South Africa's premier horse race is the Durban July Handicap (Gr 1) which never fails to attract the country's finest three-year-old runners and up, trainers, jockeys, betting action or best-dressed racegoers.
And scheduled for Greyville Racecourse on Saturday, July 31, this year's R2.5 million Durban July Handicap over 2200m on turf should be no different, especially if the caliber of its early nominations are anything to go by.
Still 'top dog' is 7-year-old gelding Pocket Power, a horse that has won more than his fair share of big South African races. He even won the 2008 Durban July Handicap, albeit tied with top-rated runner, Dancer's Daughter.
As a three-time SA Horse of the Year winner, Pocket Power is popular in South Africa amongst even non-horse racing fans, and after his late-finish victory in last month's Pinnacle Stakes, should start as the race favourite.
Also in with a shot to win this year's Durban July Handicap is Mother Russia, a highly-prized 4-year-old filly that has proved time and again that she can run just as well as the boys, and has notched up 12 career wins to prove it.
Interestingly, one of Mother Russia's best efforts to date was in this year's J & B Met in Cape Town, where despite finishing in second place behind River Jetez, the sheer quality of her run served to silence her detractors forever.
Here is a list of 2010 Durban July Handicap nominations to date:
