The Belmont Stakes is held in Belmont Park, Elmont, New York and is also known as the "Test of the Champion" due to the fact that it is the final race of the Triple Crown.

The Belmont Stakes is an impressive Grade I stakes race and takes place annually in June. It is the third leg of the Triple Crown, It is a 2400 meter race for thoroughbred horses of 3 years of age. The race takes place on a massive track and many three-year-old horses are not accustomed to this distance. In a race of this length, the position of the horse and the timing of the move to chase for the lead is critical. The distance of the race has been changed over the years but has remained at the 2400 meters since 1926.

The Belmont Stakes Racetrack

The Belmont Stakes takes place at the Belmont Park Racetrack, a 430-acre facility. Over the years many of the champion horses in history have run at Belmont. The Belmont Stakes is the third leg of Thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown, following the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.

Great names that have won the Belmont include Seattle Slew, Easy Goer, Affirmed, Citation, Assault, War Admiral and Man o' War. It is not uncommon for the race to attract crowds of more than 100,000.

Belmont Park is the biggest North American racetrack and splits New York's thoroughbred racing action with Aqueduct. Along with Saratoga it is one of the premier East Coast racecourses.
