History |
Belmont Park, one of the most
beautiful racecourses in America opened in May 1905. It plays host to
the world renowned Belmont Stakes race which is the third race in the
Triple Crown.
The racecourse is also affectionately known as the
Championship Track due to the fact that almost all racing champs have
ridden there at some time. Visitors to the racecourse are greeted by a
statue of the noble champion Secretariat who ran his most famous race
there in 1973. He won the Belmont Stakes by an amazing 31 lengths to win
the Triple Crown.
Belmont Park is managed by the New York Racing
Association which is a non profit organization. |

Facilities |
Belmont Park was closed for
renovations in the mid 1960's, with all races being moved to the
Aqueduct racetrack for the duration. The Belmont Park grandstand which
was built for $30.7m is the biggest grandstand at any racecourse in use
today. It can seat 33 000 and can accommodate 100 000 in total. The
backyard which stands alongside the grandstand can accommodate
approximately 10 000. Unlike many other racecourses, Belmont does not
allow picnicking to take place on the infield.
Belmont Park is
home to the longest dirt racetrack in racing. The 'Big Sandy' is 1 and
half miles long. Inside this course is the Widener Turf track, a turf
track which is 1 and 5/16ths of a mile long. Inside the Widener Turf
Course is the 1 and 3/16ths Inner Turf course.
The Belmont Park
complex is situated on 430 acres. Racing, training and barn facilities
are on site. The racecourse has appeared on both the big and small
screen many times; the most recent being an episode of 'Everybody loves
Raymond'.
