Beef Or Salmon Will Miss The Grand National - 02-22-08
February 22 - Beef Or Salmon may well be set to retire soon.
Michael Hourigan of Lisaleen stables said that "Beef" would not take part in the 2008 John Smith's Grand National which takes place in April. Beef Or Salmon is a contender for next month's Cheltenham Gold Cup (a race he has failed to win in the past), but he will definitely not be carrying top weight in the greatest chase in the world. This decision was taken by both Hourigan and Beef Or Salmon's owners, Joe Craig and Dan McLarnan.
Hourigan, who is one of the top 8 racehorse trainers in Ireland; having approximately 600 wins under his belt, said that the 12-year-old Beef Or Salmon might still run in the Irish Grand National on Easter Monday. He said that "he's 12 now and like the rest of us he's not getting any younger but he's still in very good order, like every horse, he cannot go on forever and we have talked about retiring him, but we'll see how things pan out over the coming months before we make any decisions."
Beef Or Salmon was bought by Hourigan in 2000 when he was 4 years old. He was an unrated, unraced horse with absolutely no blue blood coursing through his veins, but Hourigan said merely that Beef was his kind of horse, the kind of horse that made you look twice.
Hourigans instincts paid off as Beef Or Salmon is set to retire with an astonishing 10 Grade 1 wins to his name.
