Barry Hills |
Barry Hills was born in Worcester, England on April 2, 1937.
Hills is based in Lambourn which is also known as the 'Village of
the Racehorse'. He has been in the top 10 list of English trainers for
more than 32 years and has trained in excess of 2700 winners. He has won
10 Classics and many Group 1 Stakes races in England, France and
Ireland.
Hills started out his career as an apprentice jockey to Fred
Rimell and George Collin in the 1950's. In 1959 he was head lad for John
Oxley. Hills applied for his horse training license in 1969 and began
training thoroughbreds at the South Bank Stables. He moved to Robert
Sangsters Manton Yard in Wiltshire in 1986 and stayed there until 1990.
The same year he moved back to South Bank Stables where he remains to
this day.

In 1994 he began to build
a new more high-tech yard which comprised of 125 acres of private
gallops, 3 barns and a big indoor arena amongst others. Since then the
modern facilities have continued to grow. 2001 was his best season ever
with regards to prize money won.
Hills is the only flat
trainer to have trained a Pattern winner every season since
this system of race classification was introduced.
Barry Hills' sons are all involved in the horse racing industry. 3
of the 5 are trainers or assistant trainers and 2 are jockeys. |
