Asiatic Boy to Win Suburban Handicap - 07-04-09
July 4 - Asiatic Boy stunned his fans when he ran such a lousy race in the Dubai World Cup in March, despite being the favorite. However, he more than redeemed himself by finishing second in June's Stephen Foster Handicap (Gr 1), which is why he is the favorite in today's $400,000 Suburban Handicap (Gr 2).
Horseracing fans at Belmont Park, New York today will be expecting a great run out of Asiatic Boy in what will be the feature race of the 11-race card. After his future was questioned following his poor 12th place finish in Dubai, he was brought over to the United States and transferred to trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.
Under the guidance of the successful horseman, Asiatic Boy rallied and delivered a stunning if not nerve-wracking performance in the Stephen Foster Handicap. From the start of the prestigious Churchill Downs race, the six-year-old stallion was running well until he and Einstein bumped into each other in the stretch.
Luckily he managed to recover and out pace Einstein to finish not far behind race winner, Macho Again. The result showed McLaughlin that the multiple stakes winning thoroughbred - who performed admirably for his ex-South African trainer Mike de Kock - was back in form and ready to tackle more stakes.
So much so that McLaughlin decided not to wait eight weeks after the Stephen Foster to try Asiatic Boy in the $750,000 Whitney Handicap (Gr 1) at Saratoga Race Course in New York, but instead decided that after just a three week break he was ready to run in today's $400,000 Suburban Handicap (Gr 2).
Said McLaughlin, 'I'm definitely not happy about the three weeks, but Asiatic Boy is very happy and he couldn't be doing any better.' Also set to start in today's 1 1/4 mile outing are speedsters Samhoon, Cool Coal Man, Finallymadeit, and Dry Martini, Real Merchant, Stud Muffin, Ready's Echo and Rising Moon.
One of the runners that punters will no doubt consider today is Dry Martini, who has come very close at winning a number of races this year. His trainer, Barclay Tagg, has confidence in the thoroughbred as long as he makes his way to the middle of pack and stays there until the right time to make a dash for the line.
