The Ancient Title Breeders' Cup
Stakes is a Grade 1 American six furlong flat race for
three-year-old thoroughbreds and older. The Ancient Title Breeders' Cup
Stakes is usually run each year in early October at the picturesque
Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California as part of the Oak Tree Racing
Association meeting.
Run on dirt (although it was run on a cushion track in 2007) the
Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Stakes carries a purse of $300,000 and
is part of the prestigious Breeders' Cup Challenge series. The winner of
the Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Stakes is automatically legible for the
$2,000,000 Breeders' Cup Sprint (Gr 1). Due to the length of the race,
the Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Stakes is considered a sprint.
Inaugurated in 1985, the Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Stakes was named
after the top-rated California-bred horse Ancient Title (1970 -1981),
who earned himself California Horse of the Year on two occasions and was
finally inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in
2008.
In 2007 the Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Stakes was won in a record time
of 1:07.57 by Idiot Proof, trained by Clifford W. Sise and ridden by
David Flores. Ed Delahoussaye is the only jockey to have won the race
four times - in 1990, 1993, 1996 and 2001. Trainers John W. Sadler and
Bruce Headley each have three Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Stakes wins to
their names. |
