Ambiance Stud Farm to Close after 16 Years - 05-06-09
May 6 - Although one of the smaller stud farms in South Africa, Ambiance Stud based in the Northern Cape town of Worcester will close its (stable) doors after 16 years of breeding some of the country's foremost thoroughbreds because its owner, Dr. Marianne Thomson, has decided to retire at the age of 69.
Said Dr. Thomson, 'The other day I attended a funeral of a friend and I was sitting in church thinking about how short life is. Life is for the living. I?ve had a joyous time in breeding but now it is time to look at my priorities. This is the right time to retire for me as there are still many things I want to do in my twilight years.'
On Wednesday May 20 Ambiance Stud will auction off it entire inventory of bloodstock which is reported to include 42 fillies and mares and 40 weanlings. Over the last 16 years, the breeding operation produced many impressive winners, including J&B Met winner Alastor and Cape Derby winner The Sheik.
In addition, Ambiance Stud was responsible for breeding Sarabande, who won the Majorca Stakes as well as Al Nitak, who proved to be a champion sprinter, notching up a string of Graded victories across the country. The news of Dr. Thomson's retirement has shocked many in the horseracing industry.
However, she feels that her decision to retire from breeding is the right decision for her and her family, many of whom are scattered around the world. A member of the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA) and a licensed vetinerarian, Dr. Thomson has said that she would like to continue working as vet.
'I have realised that working as a vet is something I enjoy above anything else,' she said. 'I have to convey my heartfelt thanks to all who have contributed to the success of Ambiance Stud. Part of my decision to retire stems from the current economic climate, as I don't want to endanger my retirement annuities.'
Former Equus Champion mare Jessamine, who is in foal to leading South African runner Jet Master, is expected to be included in the Ambiance Stud auction, as well as Hasta Aqui, the dam of Rosinante, and many others by quality stallions such as National Assembly, Northern Guest, Western Winter and Al Mufti.
