All Eyes on Look Here After Juddmonte Oaks Win - 06-10-08
June 10 - Last week UK horseracing fans had a smorgasbord of racing action to
look forward to at Epsom Downs racecourse in south London, home to the
prestigious Epsom Derby and equally respected Juddmonte Oaks.
The latter saw long-shot, Look Here, finishing first with odds of 33 to 1.
If the almost 100 000 strong Epsom crowd was surprised at Look Here's blistering
performance, so too was her trainer, Ralph Beckett. Visibly speechless, Beckett
was understandably basking in the glory of his first major race win in his young
career, along with Look Here's jockey, Seb Sanders, with his first classic win.
Said Sanders after the race, 'I know I made a hash of it in the Lingfield Oaks
Trial, but I found out a lot about her that day, and used it today. Deep down I
had a feeling she would run a massive race, and I'm pleased to say I was right.'
Before winning the Juddmonte Oaks, the underrated filly had only raced twice
before, the first time as a 2-year-old when she won a maiden, and later when she
placed second in the Lingfield Oaks Trial. On that occasion, Sanders blamed
himself for not bringing home a victory but more then made up for it at Epsom.
From the gate Look Here looked like horse possessed, grabbing the lead by the
two-furlong marker and never letting it go. Aidan O'Brien's Moonstone was hot on
her heels, but never looked close to catching the leader, finishing in second
place, 3 3/4 lengths behind. John Oxx's Katiyrck snatched third, while the 5 to
2 favorite, Lush Lashes, finished in a disappointing fifth. Chinese White,
another horse with high hopes, ran a lack-luster race.
Pulling himself together after the race, Beckett addressed gathered race fans
and media, starting off with an apology. 'I must apologize to anyone standing
next to me towards the finish and I'm just glad the cameras were not focused on
me. I was really willing her on. I can only describe it as an amazing feeling.'
The young trainer went on to praise jockey, Sanders, and Look Here for a
splendid win, especially because of the filly's limited experience on grass.
'She had only done two pieces of work before running at the end of last season,
and had only worked on grass once. However, we decided the time was right to run
her.'
Regarding future plans for Look Here, Beckett said that he would not run her in
the Irish Oaks because he is not keen to travel her at this point.
