Acoma Delivers Sterling Victory in Mrs Revere Stakes - 11-10-08
November 10 - While Acoma and My Princess Jess went into Saturday's Mrs. Revere Stakes (Gr 2) at Churchill Downs Racecourse in Kentucky as the favorites, it was undoubtedly Acoma who shined the brightest as she bided her time under jockey Julien Leparoux before making her winning move.
In her last race of the season as a three-year-old, the David Carroll trained filly showed her true speed and stamina in the latter stages, but from the start and during the middle stages was content to remain in the middle of the field - keeping a good pace while the race leader My Baby Baby did all the work.
However, coming out the final turn Leparoux made his move, rapidly moving the filly up through the field dispatching the other three-year-old fillies as she went. With just a few furlongs to go, Acoma had My Baby Baby firmly in her sights who was still travelling very well, but as it turned out, not well enough.
Acoma came flying past My Baby Baby in the final stages to win the Mrs. Revere Stakes by a convincing 1 1/4 lengths, completing the race in a time of 1:43.52 to the delight of her breeders and owners, Helen Groves and Helen Alexander. Punters astute enough to bet on Acoma were paid out $7.20.
After My Baby Baby in second place came Scolara in third, while race favorite My Princess Jess only managed a disappointing fifth place. Pre-race My Princess Jess' trainer Barclay Tagg had high hopes for the filly in the Mrs. Revere Stakes, but it wasn't to be. She hung wide pretty much the whole race.
However, Acoma's trainer David Carroll trainer was anything but disappointed with the way his filly ran, saying that she 'had really picked up her game'. Agreeing with that sentiment, the victorious Leparoux described Acoma's performance as superb after she 'kicked in the straight' and didn't look back.
With regards to future plans for Acoma, Carroll confirmed that he would give Acoma a few months to 'freshen up' and prepare her for next race sometime in April next year at Keeneland Racetrack, where she'll kick off the season as a four-year-old. It will be interesting to see if she retains her good form.
