A Little Warm Favored in Travers Stakes at Saratoga - 08-27-10
August 27 - Tomorrow (Saturday, August 28) horse racing fans in New York can look forward to an action-packed card at Saratoga Racecourse which features three Gr 1 races including the $1,000,000 Travers Stakes over 1 1/4 miles.
The Travers Stakes has attracted a field of 11 three-year-old colts, including favorite A Little Warm. However, given the wide and varied field in this year's Travers, it could turn out to be one of those races where anything could happen.
Said trainer Todd Pletcher, who is sending out Super Saver, winner of this year's Kentucky Derby, 'I wouldn't be surprised if anybody won it.' And even though A Little Warm is the slight favorite, racing statisticians don't rate his chances.
The reason is that he didn't run in any of this year's U.S. Triple Crown races - the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes or the Belmont Stakes - and the last time a runner won the Travers without doing so was Coronado's Quest back in 1998.
Said his trainer, Tony Dutrow, 'If A Little Warm runs back to his last race he's good in this race. Good means good, it doesn't mean a winner, but I hope he's a winner.' The colt's most recent win was in the Jim Dandy Stakes (Gr 2).
Then there is second favorite Trappe Shot, a Florida-bred trained by Kieran McLaughlin, who finished second to Lookin At Lucky in the recent Haskell Invitational. 'We are confident he can get the mile and a quarter,' said McLaughlin.
And the is little doubt that Super Saver will be well-backed tomorrow, as just the fourth Kentucky Derby winner since 1993 to contest the Travers Stakes. He will have champion jockey, Calvin Borel, aboard and start from post 11.
