2012 HorsePlayer World Series With RaceHorseOwner
Author: Marc Weinberg
December 4 - The 2012 HorsePlayer World Series is a tournament that brings together the best horse racing handicappers of North American racing in a contest that spans 3 days. Last year's winner, Bart Solomon, walked away with $296,550, after he bested a field that comprised 659 entries.
The rules of the World Series are fairly straightforward: 1 entry costs $1,000 and players may have multiple entries. Each entry consists of 45 win and place bets, of $20 each, and the player with the highest total after placing those 45 (fictitious) bets takes home an impressive 45% of the prize pool.
On each of the 3 days the contestants are required to place 15 wagers, chosen from a number of different race meetings that are held on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th of February, 2012.
The good news is that RaceHorseOwner.com will be at the event next year, held at The Orleans hotel in Las Vegas. I will blog my highs and lows of competing in this contest for the first time, after winning a satellite entry on my first attempt yesterday at Twinspires.com.
My experience of handicapping tournaments to date (the one I was in on Saturday) is that one needs to find longshots as opposed to favorites. Even one longshot will do - in my case the horse paid $52 and change for a win and that one good result was enough to see me through.
The main event prevents players from adopting a throwing darts approach, however, by capping the payout return on outsiders at 19/1 for the win and 9/1 for the place after the first $2 of each bet. So if you bet a 50/1 shot you receive $102 + $47 (approximately) and then $360 + $180 for the remaining $18 fantasy dollar bet each-way for a total return of $690. One 50/1 winner a day would still be a godsend though.
My strategy will be to hammer at 8/1 to 12/1 chances and try to cash 4 winners a day. Fingers will be crossed!
