2012 Cape Premier Yearling Sales Preview

Author: Marc Weinberg

December 6 - On January 26 and 27 of 2012, Cape Town will host the second Cape Premier Yearling Sales, and the catalogue is brimming with quality. My only issue with the sale is that it occurs so early on in the season, with many of the yearlings less than 18 months old. From a buyer's perspective it makes the selection process a lot trickier. It also compels the breeders to rush the process of preparing their products.

That being said, on paper this has already become the best sale in the country, with some mouthwatering prospects on offer. Let's look at just a few samples:

Lot 1 is FLY ALL DAY, a Jet Master filly out of Alamanda. Fly All Day is of course a full sister to All Afire, who was a Gr 1 winner. As an example of South African breeding it doesn't get much better than the very first lot, who should attract plenty of attention.

My own strategy at this sale is to buy fillies. SA fillies are truly world class - one could make the same argument for Southern Hemisphere fillies in general (Black Caviar for instance), and they frequently go for a song as they seem undervalued in their own country.

With all that in mind, what price Lot 55? The horse is called DASHING SCARLET and if she looks the part she should fetch seven figures with ease. She is by Western Winter out of Dancer's Daughter. The latter was a champion mare who won 10 races, including 5 Gr 1 races. This is her first foal, and will be one of the talking horses of the sale.

I will take a personal interest in the fortunes of Lot 261, a filly called PRESCIENT. She is by Count Du Bois out of Rose Gypsy, whose first produce was Grey Rose, a filly by Tiger Ridge that I purchased and syndicated. She was the first horse that I bought, and to date she has won twice and earned R117,000. Prescient could well be a value buy at a sale of this nature, especially as she was only born on October 16.
