2011 Summer Cup Betting Guide And Free Best Bet

Author: Marc Weinberg

November 22 - This Saturday sees the running of the 2011 Summer Cup, sponsored by Sansui with a purse of R2 million. This is the biggest race day of the year at Turffontein, and the card features four other Graded races, with The Dingaans in particular attracting a top-class field.

The best odds available in South Africa for all these races, and indeed for horse racing in general, is at SportingBet SA. Join today by following one of our links and qualify for some free bonus cash as well.

In order to maximize that loot let's try and find some winners on Saturday's card, starting with the main event. The latest betting for the Summer Cup shows Pierre Jourdan the ruling favourite at 3/1. The Apache is next at 5/1, and over the 200m distance he makes slightly more appeal than the top-weight. Mike de Kock traditionally has a stranglehold on this race, and can seemingly win it with whatever horse he throws in (one thinks of Flirtation last year), but his coupling this year seems thin on the ground.

I have to go for The Apache to win here, but if you're looking for a real longshot to upset the form book my pick is Gold Onyx. Don't discount Sean Tarry in this type of race, and Gold Onyx is weighted to have a chance here. At 50/1 currently he is worth an Each-Way gamble.

The rest of the big races are at the mercy of Mike, however. He should win The Dingaans with Merhee, who at 3/1 is my best bet of the day. Merhee won't be in SA for much longer, as he is good enough to win real money overseas.

The Merchants should be won by Link Man or Gibraltar Blue, although Shea Shea has a chance to upset the de Kock coupling at his best.

I also like the de Kock mare Gorongosa to win the big stayers race the Racing Association Handicap, towards the end of the day. She is extremely well-weighted and tough to go against.
