2011 Breeders Cup Features 29 Overseas Entries
Author: Marc Weinberg
October 27 - The 2011 Breeders' Cup meeting at Churchill Downs has attracted 193 entries, with 29 overseas runners included. They will be led by Goldikova, seeking an unprecedented fourth Breeders' Cup Mile.
The French wonder mare has won 14 Group 1 races, but has showed signs of slowing down this season. She has won twice, but lost three times. She is still a cut above the milers in the USA however, and with Dream Ahead retired, she could win it again. Gio Ponti would be the obvious danger, although he has also been entered in the Classic. His connections should opt for the mile, where he has a real winning chance.
So You Think has won eight Group 1 races in a career that has taken him from Australia to Europe and now to the USA. But he has had an awfully tough campaign this year and it would surely be a mistake to put him on dirt in the Classic. It is hard to see him winning any of the Breeders' Cup races this season.
One overseas runner who should stroll in is Sarafina. She will run in the Breeders' Cup Turf, where she stands head and shoulders above the competition. She had plenty of excuses in The Arc, and over a mile and a half she should have her way here.
The Classic should be a match race between Harvre de Grace and Uncle Mo. One would think that Larry Jones would hesitate to run a filly against the colts based upon horrible past experience, but here's hoping she comes out of the race okay. Not sure she will be able to stand up to Uncle Mo, who appears back to his best just in time.
