2011 Breeders Cup betting

2011 Breeders Cup Betting Recap - A Lack Of Brilliance

Author: Marc Weinberg

November 6 - When one considers the number of massive betting upsets at this year's Breeders Cup, then my effort of picking 4 winners out of 15 races doesn't seem too shabby. Two of them, AMAZOMBIE in the Sprint and HANSEN in the Juvenile won at odds of 10/1 or better so it was a profitable two days. The other two for the record were SECRET CIRCLE and MY MISS AURELIA, who looked a cut above their respective rivals and proved to be two favorites who did not disappoint on the day.

I also thought GOLIDKOVA would be beaten as she has lost several lengths this season, and that the Classic would produce an upset. Unfortunately I went for FLAT OUT but thought that the race would be between him and DROSSELMEYER, the eventual uninspiring "champion". The fact that he fought out a thrilling finish with another average horse in GAME ON DUDE shows that this was not a vintage Classic field by any means.

SO YOU THINK ran well but was asked to do to much following a lengthy campaign (again as I suspected would happen), and UNCLE MO simply does not stay. HAVRE DE GRACE would have been better off running on the first day and beating up on her own sex. But who am I to tell Larry Jones to stay away from these tough races against the boys?

I was very wrong in my plays on SARAFINA, who simply did not enjoy her visit to the States (she acted up before the race and refused to settle in the race), and on ELDAAFER in the Marathon. I thought it would produce an upset but failed to spot the rank outsider.

The most impressive win of all had to come from CALEB'S POSSE, who annihilated his opposition in the Dirt Mile. The pre-race interview with Maragh on ESPN was amazing television, as the jockey sang the praises of his mount and could not have sounded more confident that his horse was about to turn in a world class effort. If only I had listened to him, risen from the couch and placed a bet! But if I had to do that every time a jockey said he was on the right one then I'd be physically fit and bankrupt.
