2008 Melbourne Cup Runner Profound Beauty Injured - 10-19-08

October 19 - In a week fraught with injuries and subsequent retirements - Kentucky colt Big Brown for one - heavily touted Irish-bred 2008 Melbourne Cup runner, Profound Beauty, has joined the list after the mare suffered a bruised foot, causing her to miss two days of preparation.

The Dermot Weld-trained mare is being treated for a 'low-level bruise' by a team of veterinarians at her stall at Sandown racecourse quarantine centre, where she is currently being housed. The mare reportedly bruised her foot after she spread a show on Tuesday evening of this week.

David Phillips (a foreman working for Weld) and Peter Strafford (Racing Victoria's head farrier) reportedly treated Profound Beauty with a poultice after the injury occurred, first soaking her foot in ice water followed by a bath containing epsom salts to help ease the slight bruising.

Said Phillips, 'At this point we're confident that Profound Beauty won't suffer any lasting effects from the bruise. When we feel she is able to walk on the foot in the next few days, we'll try to get a set of tack on her and take her out for a bit of a walk and perhaps even a jog.'

It is thought that Profound Beauty - who arrived in Melbourne last Saturday after a 36-hour trip from Ireland - injured herself when she stepped on the off-fore plate and caught an edge. Aussie horse racing fans will be eager to see if Weld can repeat his previous Melbourne Cup wins at the fabled Flemington race course.

The Kildare-based trainer holds the distinction of being the only European trainer to have won the coveted Melbourne Cup - and not once but twice - with Vintage Crop in 1993 and Media Puzzle in 2002. As such, the Irishman will certainly be gunning for his third win on November 4th with Profound Beauty.

This year's AUD$5 million Melbourne Cup (which is open to three-year-olds and older) is expected to attract some of the biggest names in horseracing, including 2008 Australian Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler, Tuesday Joy, Maybe Better, English import Yellowstone and many more.
