2008 Kentucky Derby Power Rankings - 04-20-08

April 20 - The list of contenders for the 2008 Kentucky Derby has altered dramatically, but hardly surprsingly, since our first Power Rankings table was published two months ago. Back then we thought War Pass was the horse to beat but it turns out he won't even be running in the Triple Crown, or at least not in the first leg.

Now the horse who will be the Kentucky Derby favorite is the undefeated but lightly raced Big Brown, but winning this race off only three lifetime starts is next to impossible and we're not putting him #1 on our rankings. Let the controversy begin:

1. Colonel John The bias against West Coast runners will lead to this horse being undervalued in the betting - easily the form pick to date.

2. Big Brown Undefeated, clearly brilliant, but also largely untested. The Kentucky Derby experience tends to be too much for horses with only three trips to the races.

3. Z Fortune The perfect prep run last time out, and if he gets a smoother trip he can win here.

4. Visionaire If he gets the right pace he will close best of all in the big one. Must include for all Exotics wagers.

5. Pyro Last run looks too bad to be true, could be good betting value for the Derby.

6. Adriano Prado hads chosen to ride him, so that has to mean a lot. Needs more improvement to win.

7. Gayego Might struggle to confirm the placings with Z Fortune when they meet again.

8. Bob Black Jack Stamina questions otherwise he'd be rated higher on this list. Very game though.

9. Tale Of Ekati Won the Wood but had a perfect trip and still didn't blow anyone away with his Beyer figure for that race.

10. Cowboy Cal Doesn't look like the best Pletcher horse but has done little wrong in preps for the big race.
