2008 Kentucky Derby Contenders Ranked - 03-18-08
March 18 - Horse racing is a funny old game. Who could have predicted that War Pass would finish last in the Tampa Bay Derby and thus go from number 1 in our vital 2008 Kentucky Derby Power Rankings all the way down to number 7? The results of other races also threw the form of horses like Pyro and Visionaire into serious question.
Z Fortune's loss over the weekend means that the Risen Star Stakes formline may not be that solid. In that race he finished second and split Pyro and Visionaire, who were impressive winners of prep races last time out. The Blue Grass Stakes is shaping up to be an interesting test for this year's Kentucky Derby Contenders as the road to the Triple Crown becomes a lot windier.
Here are the latest 2008 Triple Crown Power Rankings:
1. Pyro Winner of the Louisiana Derby last time out.
2. Cool Coal Man Won the Fountain Of Youth. Is he now the #1 horse in Zito's barn?
3. Visionaire We liked that Gotham Stakes win a lot.
4. Colonel John Won the Sham Stakes last time out.
5. Georgie Boy Winner of the San Vincente Stakes.
6. El Gato Malo This guy still has plenty of upside.
7. War Pass Does a 1/20 shot who finishes stone last deserve a mulligan? You decide.
8. Denis Of Cork An under the radar sort, but will have his suporters.
9. Court Vision Another horse who is worth one more shot.
10. Fierce Wind At least Zito still has plenty of options.
