2008 Grand National Betting Preview - 04-04-08
April 4 - Could it really be true? Well, you better believe it because Sportingbet is making life a little more interesting for punters at this weekend's 2008 Grand National at Aintree by paying out for the first five horses to cross the line. Yes, you heard it right, the first five places.
All the good money this Saturday is on Cloudy Lane, Donald McCain's eight-year old, who has looked like a champ all year. Not since the '70s, when his father Red Rum was the shortest priced favourite, has a horse had such prohibitive odds.
But many a good man has lost his shirt on a sure deal and it may be wise to look at little lower down the list. Hedgehunter, at 25/1, is an old pro having won or been a runner-up three years running. The question is does this old boy still have what it takes to slug it out with the young pretenders. Then is there Jongo O'Neill-trained Butler's Cabin, ridden by 12-time champion Tony McCoy. After numerous attempts, McCoy is desperate for win this year for fear of being labeled a failure. There is no discounting the desperate.
Oh, the nerve-wracking toil of a dedicated punter! But spare a thought, all you fretting punters, for the man with the most stressful job this weekend. Sean McDonald will have the thankless task of starting the prestigious event which in the past 20 years been bedeviled by false starts. Will he cope, at this his first attempt, knowing that your money will be riding on the fact that he orchestrates a clean start?
