Juddmonte Oaks

Chinese White Oaks

2008 Epsom Oaks Betting Preview - 06-05-08

June 5 - Top Irish jockey, Pat Smullen, is in good spirits for tomorrow's Juddmonte Oaks (Group 1) at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, England, which is not surprising given that he'll be riding the impressive filly, Chinese White, the second favorite at 9/2 odds.

The Juddmonte Oaks will see 16 3-year-old runners at the Epsom Oaks starting gate, with all eyes on betting favorite, Lush Lashes at 11/4, third favorite Katiyra, at 6, and of course, Chinese White, who many punters, this writer included, feel has an excellent shot of winning the 12 furlong race.

When Chinese White debuted at Leopardstown in Dublin, Ireland last September, she stunned the crowd and her connections with a six-length victory, showing that she is a true sprinter and has plenty of heart. She also won a Listed even recently at Gowran Park in Kilkenny.

Smullen was recently quoted as saying that he 'wouldn't swop his Chinese White ride for anything', and while he admits that the 2008 Epsom Oaks is a big step up for the filly, he has complete confidence in her abilities and expects that she'll take the hardy field in her pride.

'Up until now, Chinese White has done everything we have asked of her and run extremely well. I am very excited about riding her tomorrow, and while you never know how a horse will handle a track until they are thundering down it, I think her agility will stand her in good stead,' said Smullen.

When asked how he felt about being drawn 14 out of 16, Smullen said that he doesn't believe that it will play too big a role in tomorrow's race, because he is prepared to navigate Chinese White into position come race day, which is expected to attract a large live crowd and TV audience.

Also be sure to keep a lookout for Peter Chapple-Hyam's Cape Amber, who finished in second place after Lush Lashes in the recent Musidora Stakes, Katiyra, a filly believed to be in good shape for the Group 1 race, and Adored, one of six runners trained by Aidan O'Brien, and ridden by the talented Johnny Murtagh.
