2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup Antepost Betting Update -12-05-07

December 5 - The 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup will only be run in March next year, but is the subject of plenty of media attention as the Antepost betting market has already been very lively indeed. The reason is that two jump racing superstars are expected to clash, and moreover, they are both trained by the same man, Paul Nicholls.

Nicholls is in the enviable position of training the horse that everyone has to beat, Kauto Star, as well as the pretender to his crown as the king of jump racing, namely the up and coming Denman.

Denman's effort in winning the Hennessy last time out had every wag and tout on the racecourse agog, and he looked like a very special horse indeed. His next mission is the Lexus, for which he is currently a short-priced 1-3 in the betting.

The Hennessy win was so impressive in fact that he is now joint favorite in the Cheltenham Gold Cup betting with his previously far more vaunted stable mate. Kauto Star is also at 2-1 in the betting, and his trainer has stressed in a recent interview that he remains the horse to beat.

This could all be lip service, but the stable's true preference will certainly become known once jockey Ruby Walsh decides which of the two he will ride. As the stable's number one jockey his decision will carry plenty of weight with punters. This takes nothing away from the ability of the number two rider for the Nicholl's yard, Sam Thomas, who is gaining quite a bit of celebrity in his own right thanks to big wins on both horses.

A lot could happen between now and March in terms of Gold Cup betting moves, and we'll keep you updated on the fortunes of both horses, as well as any other potential longshot runners. For now though Paul Nicholls must be revelling in the fact that he trains the two best jump horses in the United Kingdom.
