2007 Japan Cup Goes To Admire Moon - 11-30-07
November 30 - Admire Moon will go to stud in Japan with an incredible horse racing career behind him. 10 wins from 17 starts netting a total stakes earned of $10,214,618. It will be very easy for Sheikh Mohammed 's Darley stud to attract the best breeders in Japan with a resume like this one, but the victory in the 2007 Japan Cup may well be considered the crowning achievement.
Admire Moon was not expected to stay the 2400m and punters looked to Meisho Samson to win the Japan Cup. He started a short-priced favourite, and although he came with a rattling late run he could not catch the horse that was purchased earlier this year by the Darley operation. Pop Rock and Vodka were also doing their best work at the finish, and Pop Rock ultimately got up for second. Meisho Samson had to settle for third, with the game filly Vodka also within a length of the winner in fourth place.
Credit for the win has to go to Admire Moon's jockey Yasunari Iwata, who rode a tactically superb race. He used a good draw (four) to save ground throughout the race, nursing his mount and ensuring that the mile and a half distance was within his range.
Admire Moon is a four year old son of End Sweep, who is unfortunately deceased, out of a Sunday Silence mare. The runner-up, Pop Rock, is also by a Sunday Silence mare.
Whereas this race marks the retirement of the winner, the beaten favourite Meisho Samson is expected to run again soon in Japan's next major race.
