2007 Clark Handicap Looks Wide Open - 11-23-07
November 23 - Today's racing at Churchill Downs is expected to draw as many as 20,000 to the racetrack to celebrate the Thanksgiving long weekend with some fun horse racing betting, but the main race on the card The Clark Handicap looks very tough to handicap.
Which horse should you bet on in the 133rd running of one America's oldest stakes races? Any of the runners in the 2007 Clark Handicap could win this race, which has a purse of $500,000.
Racing at Churchill Downs starts today at 11:30 a.m. EST and there are some good quality races before the 11th on the card, the Clark. Heading the field in terms of quality is Diamond Stripes, who won five of eight starts before running dismally in the Breeders' Cup Classic last time out. Still, he was thought good enough to run against the best in the country, so should be good enough to feature against this Grade 2 company.
He could have his hands full with the three runners from the Todd Pletcher yard. We look for Team Valor's Fairbanks to run a big race in this spot, but Magna Graduate and A.P. Arrow both have a shout as well.
Our pick to win it all, however, is the lone three year old runner Going Ballistic, who ships in from Florida. The Classic crop is clearly better than the older horses right now, and this horse has been improving all season long. Take the grey to win the Clark, and you should get a decent price with such a wide-open race.
