Kentucky Derby horses to watch

10 Horses To Watch For The 2012 Kentucky Derby

Author: Marc Weinberg

January 22 - In all likelihood the eventual 2012 Kentucky Derby winner is still flying under the radar. In recent years few precocious horses who show a lot as juveniles have not gone on to win the Kentucky Derby. A horse like Animal Kingdom didn't make many handicappers Top 10 list on the day of the race!

Still, we persevere, and besides it is intriguing to watch the many prep races around the country. Here are 10 horses that should make their mark over the next few months:

1. HANSEN - winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and since I had him in that race at great odds I'm not about to give up on him just yet. Has obvious heart and a lot of talent as well. Track will present no problems.

2. UNION RAGS - a superstar, who still has to rank among the best. Very fast, and not sure his style of racing will suit the Derby.

3. OUT OF BOUNDS - up this high because of what his story would represent, should he continue to go in the right direction. The liveliest prospect that the Sheik has ever had to win the race that has eluded him.

4. GEMOLOGIST - has done everything asked of him to date. Loves the track.

5. CREATIVE CAUSE - looks held on form by Hansen and Union Rags, but does still have room to improve.

6. DISCREET DANCER - has earned big speed figures, and should be a major player in the big prep races.

7. LIAISON - Winner of the Cash Call Futurity.

8. ALPHA - Another potential Derby horse for the Sheik. Not as progressive as Out of Bounds, but keep an eye on him as well.

9. EVER SO LUCKY - Noteworthy second in only his second trip to the races. Big upside.

10. ROUSING SERMON - Just held by Liaison, but very little to choose between them at this stage.
